What is Yet Another PC Cleaner
Yet Another PC Cleaner (YAC) is a potentially unwanted program (PUP), advertised as a legitimate anti-virus tool. Developed by Brazil-based company Elex do Brasil Participações Ltda Technology Inc., YAC does function as an anti-virus program but it has been noticed to spread via software bundling, and has been discovered to be stealing malware databases from other security programs.
While it is a tool that works, its distribution methods are quite questionable. Programs that use software bundling to install on users’ computers are usually classified as PUPs because they try to install without explicit permission. This method is usually how adware and browser hijackers install. If you want to find out how software bundling works and how to avoid installing unwanted programs, read the following section of the report carefully.
If you find that Yet Another PC Cleaner installed on your computer without your explicit permission, keeping it installed is not a good idea. Even if it functions, we would suggest you delete Yet Another PC Cleaner.
How does software bundling work?
Unwanted programs like adware, browser hijackers, fake security tools and system optimizers, or even legitimate programs, often use software bundling to install. This method allows programs to be installed without requiring explicit permission, which means most users are not aware of those installations.
Software bundling is essentially adding additional offers (above mentioned programs) to software, usually freeware. The offers are added in a way that allows them to install alongside the freeware, unless users manually prevent them from doing so. Because the offers are usually hidden, many users are unable to prevent their installation. If you want to make the offers visible, you need to pay attention when installing free programs. When given the option, opt for Advanced (Custom) settings. Advanced will not only display added offers but will also let you deselect them.
It’s always suggested to deselect all offers because they rarely will be of any use to you.
Should you remove Yet Another PC Cleaner?
If YAC is something you installed on your own, you may be quite happy with how it works. It does function as an anti-virus program, meaning it will detect viruses and malware inhabiting your computer. If the program installed without your explicit permission, it will make itself known pretty quickly by scanning your computer. The program also changes your browser’s settings and sets search.yac.mx as your homepage, which is highly annoying behaviour as you are not asked to authorize these changes.
Like we’ve said before, the program does actually work so it will detect malicious infections. However, the program was found to be stealing other anti-virus programs’ malware databases. Anti-malware Malwarebytes noticed their databases being stolen after being made aware of Yet Another PC Cleaner’s claims that Malwarebytes was their affiliate.
Even if the program works, using it is not recommended. It installs without permission and was found to be stealing databases. That’s not exactly a reliable program.
