What is Search Protection?
Search Protection is a potentially unwanted program developed by Spigot. It was created in order to protect its bundled software and make sure that it stays in the system without being modified by third party applications. Once Search Protection enters your computer system it changes your default search engine to search.yahoo.com aka Search The Web. Search Protection usually arrives via freeware or shareware. If you download third party software from pages like CNET, Brothersoft, Softonic and others, it is not surprising that you acquired a potentially unwanted application.
Next time be sure to check what additional programs travel with the software you want to install and choose Advanced Installation in order to deselect those programs from the list. As for your current situation, we recommend you uninstall Search Protection as soon as you can.
How does Search Protection work?
As soon as Search Protection enters your PC it changes your browser settings like home page and default search engine. Moreover, once these settings are changed you will not be able to restore them manually. If you try to modify your default search engine you will see the following notification: “Search Settings Change Notification. MyStart Search Protection has blocked an attempt by another program to change your default search settings.” The program will also provide you with ads, pop-ups and banners that will be of no use to you. It will alter your search results to include sponsored links and cause other interruptions during your browsing sessions.
Potentially unwanted programs do not add any value to your browsing experience. On the contrary, they make it practically impossible to surf the Web without constant disturbances. Furthermore, PUPs may expose you to dangerous content. If you click on one of the malicious links and get redirected to a corrupted site you could infect your PC with malware. In order to avoid these unnecessary risks and go back to normal browsing you should terminate Search Protection.
How to remove Search Protection?
The best way to get rid of Search Protection is to download and install a malware removal tool that will detect all unwanted software on your PC and eliminate it automatically. The anti-malware utility will also protect your computer in the future by preventing similar applications from accessing your system. If, however, you want to remove Search Protection manually, there are a couple of steps you will have to complete. First of all, you should find out which application(s) came bundled with the program as you will have to terminate those as well. If you are not sure what they are you can use the malware scanner. Afterwards, you can follow the manual Search Protection removal guide provided below.
